The Cowgirls were in position to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. They couldn’t close the deal. Forced to win the women’s Big 12 Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma State led most of the game only to watch No. 7 Baylor rally for a 67-62 win Friday night at the Cox Center.
“What you saw a little of is having to play (Thursday) — fresh legs at the end of a game versus a team that played,” said coach Kurt Budke. “But that’s part of it. You earn what you get. We had the bye last year and it paid off for us.” The No. 10 seed following a 4-12 conference finish, the Cowgirls led by as many as 15 points in the second half. Baylor outscored the Cowgirls 8-0 the final 21/2 minutes, taking its first lead since the opening stages with 1:51 remaining. “We had a lot of opportunities to run away with the game,” said Andrea Riley, who was 4-of-21 from the field, 0-of-10 in the second half. “Sometimes the ball just doesn’t go in the basket... And Baylor’s defense is tough to face. They’re very long and they’re athletic.” Baylor went to a smaller lineup — four guards and a center in the second half. The Bears started scoring on drives to the basket while OSU went cold. “It goes back to what we’ve done all year long,” Budke said.
