Sometimes we should take our cues from animals.

Within each herd, there’s a dominant horse who looks after the herd’s safety; who decides when the herd moves; and who disciplines and teaches respect to the errant young horses.

Common misconceptions about powerful women
→Powerful women are uncaring about others.

→Women with power are driven strictly by inflated egos.

→Ambitious women can’t be trusted (think Hillary Clinton).

→Powerful women are pushy.

→Women in power hate men.

→Powerful women are catty.

→Powerful women stepped on a lot of others to get where they are.

Who is that dominant horse? A female, known as the alpha mare.

"The alpha mare’s role is one of honor and wonderful responsibility,” said Darcie Harris, founder and chief exexcutive of EWF International in Oklahoma City, which has helped women reach their professional dreams.

Still, too many women shy away from their dreams once they realize the power they must wield. Why? Maybe they were taught not to assert themselves. Or they simply don’t trust their power and leadership skills, since they haven’t tried them on.

Harris led a recent workshop in Oklahoma City to help women understand why they gave their power away — and how to regain it.

Times have changed. Now, plenty of Oklahoma women have risen to powerful positions. They not only handle responsibility and make tough decisions, but they enjoy the passion that comes with unleashing a dream.

Take Dee Dee Dixon-Rund, who in 2001 became president of Oklahoma City Abstract & Title Co., a business that has been in her family for 102 years. Her father, Joe M. Dixon, ran it. But now his three daughters are at the helm: Dixon-Rund, Shelli Dixon-Reed and Amber Dixon-Patterson.
