Oklahoma Pet Tales: Service dog devoted to woman

This is my service dog, Diki, assisting me in my scooter at the pharmacy counter at the Yukon Walgreens. She loves people, so she is a natural for her job. She stands up at counters to let people know that I am there, since I have often been overlooked when I’ve been without her. Though she doesn’t usually tolerate her sunglasses inside, she tolerated them for the sake of the Walgreens staff, who had to take her picture.

She has been doing her job for about seven years and has flown from here to Washington, D.C., Washington state, New Hampshire, Philadelphia and San Diego. She goes under the seat in front of me, and most people don’t even know she is on board. But on one flight, the woman in the seat in front of me had some food in her hand and bent down. Diki knows not to take the food but she did sniff at it. In doing so, the woman felt her whiskers and let out a scream since she didn’t know Diki was under her seat! Ever since, I usually warn people.
