Nobody goes through an undefeated season without encountering a stern test. And the Norman North No. 1 doubles team definitely received that in the Class 6A state championship match.

But as the team of Sam Geurkink and Kevin Boyd has done all season, they never let the moment get to them.

Geurkink and Boyd battled back against Tulsa Union’s Ryan Proctor and Tayler Gallien to win in three sets and win Norman North’s first tennis championship Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

While the boys were concentrating on their match, they suddenly became the favorites of everyone wearing Putnam North colors.

Because Norman North won, Putnam North won the team championship over Tulsa Union.

“I loved the crowd,” Boyd said. “That was the most fun I’ve ever had playing tennis in my entire life.”

Boyd said it was the greatest tennis environment he’s ever been in, but he tried not to think about that.

“You start doing that, then you get tight and nervous,” Boyd said. “You know what’s at stake, but you have to try to keep focus, too.”

Focus wasn’t an issue as Tulsa Union gave them their biggest and best challenge of the season and won the first set in a tie-breaker.

Around the middle of the second set, Putnam North followers flocked to the court to start cheering on the Timberwolves pair.

“It was surreal,” Geurkink said about the atmosphere.

The pair are used to being unnoticed.
