Color receives more than lip service from artist

Michael Marcus knows why women have been puckering up to his lipstick.

"We offer color,” he said.

When women are looking for a quick update, they don’t gravitate to a nude lipstick. "It doesn’t do it for you. It doesn’t perk you up. ... Are you really encouraged to spend $24 on anything that you don’t go, ‘Wow, that’s so different; that’s so new?’”

Marcus, a makeup artist for more than 20 years, introduced his signature line in 1999. It’s at Dillard’s, Penn Square Mall, where Marcus will offer consultations Friday and Saturday.

It’s not just lipstick that boasts color. Marcus’ entire line is color-driven with shades that pop and beckon. Many of the shades are sheer; not everything is intense.

"We don’t want anyone to look clownish, of course. To me, wearing color is in part about attitude, about confidence,” he said. "It’s finding the right color so you’re wearing it rather than it wearing you.”

His trick for building a face around color is to put lipstick on first. "Don’t start with the eyes ... because it goes back to the theory that the right lipstick can make your eyes stand out regardless of how much eye makeup you’re wearing. Once you pick the right lipstick color you want to wear, the rest of your makeup will balance it out.
