STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State football program has focused on defensive playmakers with its recent recruiting classes. That trend continued Thursday as Arp (Texas) High School defensive back Lavocheya Cooper committed to the Cowboys. Cooper chose OSU over Baylor, Iowa, Missouri, Utah, Iowa, TCU and Houston.

"They could put him anywhere and he’d do well,” Arp coach Dale Irwin said. "He’ll probably end up at defensive back because he will lay the wood on you.”

The 6-1, 185-pound safety prospect is the Cowboys’ 14th known commitment for the Class of 2010. Cooper was a Texas Class 2A All-Stater as a defensive back and kick returner as a junior.

"He has a nose for the ball,” Irwin said. "He likes contact and he doesn’t shy away from it.”

Cooper had 1,602 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on offense, 72 tackles and seven interceptions on defense in 2008. He also added three kickoff returns for touchdowns and three punt returns for touchdowns on special teams.

Asked the number one attribute Cooper will bring to Stillwater, Irwin said: "He has a tremendous will to win and is a fierce competitor.”
