MIDWEST CITY — In the decade since it opened, Holy Family Maternity Home has helped 149 girls ages 12 to 17 who have become pregnant, director Mary Jane Webster said.

The home operated by Catholic Charities at 6821 Eddie Drive will celebrate its 10th anniversary at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Most Reverend Eusebius J. Beltran, archbishop of Oklahoma City, will preside at a Mass of thanksgiving. Staff-guided tours will be available from 6 to 8 p.m.

The home provides residential care, counseling and community services. The average age of residents has been 16, Webster said.

The center encourages girls to take advantage of the home as soon as possible after they become pregnant.

Girls can stay up to a year after giving birth and of the 92 babies the home has helped care for, only six have been placed for adoption. Most babies remain with their mothers and their families.

Many of the girls are from low-income situations.

"Lots of times, family members are upset about their pregnancy and will kick them out of their house,” Webster said.
