CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Thunderstorms have forced NASA to call off space shuttle Discovery’s launch. The storms popped up late Monday around the launch site. The thunderstorms eased, but not fast enough. Launch director Pete Nickolenko waited as long as he could before halting the countdown to the early Tuesday liftoff.

Rhode Island to shut down
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island will shut down its state government for 12 days and hopes to trim millions of dollars in funding for local governments under a plan Gov. Don Carcieri outlined Monday to balance a budget hammered by surging unemployment and plummeting tax revenue.


Drugs found inside birds

LIMA, Peru — Peruvian police expecting to find a shipment of cocaine hidden in a crate holding two live turkeys were surprised to discover the drug surgically implanted inside the birds. Acting on a tip, officers stopped a vehicle outside the city of Tarapoto, officials said Monday.
