Colorado needs a quick fix for running game

TOLEDO, Ohio — Colorado coach Dan Hawkins knows what needs fixing following an opening loss against Colorado State. He just has little time to get it done.

The Buffaloes face a quick turnaround and a long trip before playing Toledo on Friday, giving them just four days between their first two games.

"You can sit around and complain about late games, early games, Saturday or Sunday, whatever it is,” he said. "But that’s the way it is, let’s go, and if you handle it that way you’re usually pretty good.”

The short week will only mean cramming in preparation time and a little less sleep for the coaches, Hawkins said.

What will keep them up more than anything is trying to solve what went wrong with Colorado’s running game against Colorado State.

The Buffaloes (0-1) had just 29 yards rushing. Sophomore tailback Darrell Scott, a prized recruit who was expected to do big things, carried the ball only once for 1 yard.

Offensive tackle Ryan Miller said the line needs to eliminate the mental errors that caused too many missed blocks.

"We could have been a lot more physical, but if you don’t know who to hit, it doesn’t matter,” he said.

→The buzz: Colorado is coming off a 23-17 loss to rival Colorado State Sunday night, the Rams’ first win in Boulder in 23 years. QB Cody Hawkins said the Buffaloes could flush that loss out of their system quickly with a winning trip to Toledo. But is three days of practice enough time to fix things? Toledo lost 52-31 to Purdue in coach Tim Beckman’s debut. The Rockets are 2-0 at home against the Big 12, having beaten Kansas in 2006 and Iowa State in ’07.
