A free fishing clinic is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Joe B. Barnes Regional Park, 8700 E Reno Ave. The clinic is open to children age 6 to 15. Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. the day of the event.

The creek at the park will be stocked with fish by the state Wildlife Department, one of the event sponsors. Additional sponsors are Midwest City Parks and Recreation Department and Midwest City Optimist Club.

Children will learn casting, knot tying and outdoor ethics. Children may bring fishing poles; poles will be provided if needed.

After the clinic, the children may fish at the creek until noon, said Scott Bartel, Midwest City’s parks and recreation supervisor.

The second children’s event, set for 7 p.m. Sept. 28, is the 2009 Midwest City NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick local competition at the city’s softball complex at Joe B. Barnes Regional Park. The competition is open to boys and girls age 8 to 15.

Top scorers in each age group will advance to a sectional competition, set for 8 a.m. Oct. 3 at Taft Stadium, 2901 NW 23, in Oklahoma City. The competitors will try for a chance to advance to team championships and national finals. The NFL Punt, Pass & Kick National Finals will be in January at an NFL divisional playoff game.
