OU football notebook: No combination locks on offensive line

Although the offensive line that started the game didn’t produce a score after earning a first-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Oklahoma offensive line coach James Patton did find a combination of five guys that he liked more than the rest.

Patton saw the most consistency with senior Trent Williams and sophomore Jarvis Jones playing tackle, freshman Tyler Evans and senior Brian Simmons as the two guards, and freshman Ben Habern at center.

"They all rotated though,” Patton said. "We’re just keeping it a competitive situation. We all need to play better.”

Coach Bob Stoops said he didn’t plan on trying one combination of five players consistently. Instead, he said he wanted eight players who he could count on to protect his quarterback and open up holes in the running game.

Patton said sophomore Stephen Good, junior Cory Brandon and junior Tavaris Jeffries are also in the rotation.

Third down focus
Receivers coach Jay Norvell had a lot to complain about after his receivers’ performance against BYU. Although that list shrunk in the Sooners’ 64-0 win over Idaho State, he still sees plenty of room for improvement.
