Was Saturday’s methodical beatdown of Baylor the perfect setup to the Texas game?

Win. Check.

Sharp execution. Check.

Injury-free. Check.

Bring on the No. 3-ranked Longhorns for one of the biggest conference showdowns ever played in Stillwater.

Look around the country — heck, the Big 12 — at some scores just from Saturday, yet indicative of what this season has been all about.

Iowa State 9, Nebraska 7. Texas A&M 52, Texas Tech 30.

Nationally, you had No. 1 Alabama 12, Tennessee 10. Clemson 40, No. 8 Miami 37.

The gimmes are gone.

So, yes, an easy, breezy win over Baylor couldn’t have been scripted cleaner.

"No question,” said Cowboys coach Mike Gundy. "You’re always concerned when you play on the road, especially college football. You hope your game plan works, and you hope your players are up and running and are excited about it.

"Our guys decided on Monday to practice well and get prepared to play in this game. And it worked out for them.”

Will Kendall Hunter finally return, just in time for Texas?

As we’ve heard for better than a week now, that’s up to Hunter.

But he appears close; close enough to test his problematic foot during pregame Saturday, before sitting out a fourth straight game.

Gundy says doctors have cleared Hunter, who now must trust his ability to plant and push off the foot. In fairness to Hunter, only he knows the pain involved.

Among coaches, there seems to be a sense of optimism they’ll have Hunter.
