Daniela Cruz was born Nov. 4 with a congenital birth defect called esophageal atresia. Her upper esophagus failed to connect with her lower esophagus, which instead connected to her airway or windpipe.

Although Daniela looked like a normal 6-pound baby, parents Michael and Ketina Cruz quickly knew something was wrong because she couldn’t eat without choking. She was transported from a Lawton hospital to The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center.

"It’s a rare and lethal condition but completely curable with surgery,” OU Health Sciences Center physician Niki Puffinbarger said during a news conference Tuesday.
