Heating help is available in Oklahoma

BY BRIAN SARGENT Published: December 5, 2009
Help with home heating costs is available through the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program administered by the state Department of Human Services.

The application period began Tuesday and will end when all money has been dispersed.

Federal funding for the program in Oklahoma is $18 million.

Last year, more than 100,000 households received assistance.

Many, but not all, households that receive public assistance through the department automatically will be authorized for the program. DHS will notify those households of their eligibility.

Eligibility is based on household income and assets. The amount of assistance varies, based on the home’s heating source and household size.

Households that are usually pre-approved are encouraged to apply at their local DHS office if they have recently moved or did not receive a pre-approval notice this year, program coordinator Cari Crittenden said.

Low-income households that do not receive public assistance also may be eligible for help.

Maximum net monthly income guidelines for the Home Energy Assistance Program administered by the state Department of Human Services:

• $1,174 for a family of one

• $1,579 for a family of two

• $1,984 for a family of three

• $2,389 for a family of four

• $2,794 for a family of five

• $3,200 for a family of six

• $3,605 for a family of seven

• $4,010 for a family of eight
