They are united by blood now, each having received a kidney donated by the family of another Oklahoma boy who died on Christmas Day.

Ashton and Brandon’s parents got the calls about donor kidneys in the early hours of Dec. 26.

Despite the ice and snow clogging roadways, could the boys make it to OU Medical Center for lifesaving transplants?

Both families said they could make it, and hours later the boys were being evaluated for surgery.

"It was a very happy and yet sad occasion at the same time,” said Dr. Puneet Sindhwani, the surgeon who performed the back-to-back transplants Dec. 27.

While one family grieved, two more clutched hope that their sons would survive.

Ashton, 7, has a form of kidney disease called focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, and Brandon, 12, has dysplastic — or malformed — kidneys.
