Matt Hecox, who is seeking a House seat from Norman, was arrested New Year’s Eve for driving while under the influence of alcohol, records show.

Hecox, of Norman, failed to mention his misdemeanor arrest when he announced his candidacy last week for the House District 44 seat.

Hecox, a Democrat, said Tuesday he made an "an out-of-character error in judgment by drinking and driving.”

"I am truly sorry for my actions,” said Hecox, 22. "I know this type behavior is unacceptable, not only for the office I am seeking, but as a community member in Norman.”

Hecox, a University of Oklahoma student, said he will continue his campaign.

Another Democrat, Isaiah McCaslin, announced Monday he was also seeking the post. The incumbent, Rep. Bill Nations, D-Norman, cannot seek re-election because of legislative term limits.

Hecox is due back in court Feb. 9.
