OU football notebook: Eddrick Loften going to Tennessee

Eddrick Loften, a safety from Irving, Texas, who was once orally committed to Oklahoma, pledged to the Volunteers over the weekend.

"I like (new Tennessee coach Derek) Dooley a lot,” Loften told the Chattanooga Times Free Press. "He’s a cool guy … a real straightforward kind of guy. He wants to really change the program and turn it around, and he wants guys like me to help him do it.

"I really liked what he was talking about.”

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Loften committed to OU last February, but he decommitted in December as Loften and OU mutually parted ways.

Rivals ranks Loften as the No. 14 safety in the country.

The Sooners, however, have five other defensive back (Aaron Colvin, Tony Jefferson, James Haynes, Quentin Hayes and Julian Wilson) commitments for this class.

OU will have two former players participating in Saturday’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.: running back Chris Brown and offensive tackle Trent Williams.

Williams, who is being projected by some as a possible Top 15 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, could help his standing with a solid showing this week.

Brown, who rushed for 42 career TDs at OU, is being projected as a mid-round pick but could also improve his draft stock.

Over the weekend, ex-OU cornerback Brian Jackson participated in the East-West Shrine Game. Jackson’s West team lost, 13-10, but he reportedly had a strong week of practice in Orlando, Fla., leading up to the game.
