Edmond cuts in-service day
The Edmond School District sent a note home with students says that school will be held Feb. 15. It originally was scheduled as a teacher in-service day, Brenda Lyons, public information officer, said. The district had three snow days built into its schedule and added another day to the end of school. The last day will be May 28.

When power was restored to Duncan Public Schools after five days, pipes in the high school’s heating system burst, flooding 11 rooms.

"That was our biggest challenge,” Superintendent Sherry Labyer said, estimating that the 11 broken heating units could cost $5,000 each to replace. "We will probably get some relief with insurance for those.”

In school
Labyer said she made the decision at 6 a.m. Wednesday to hold school, but then power to about half of one elementary school went out for several hours, forcing students to double up classes.

"This time of year, when it’s so close to testing that you’re trying to ensure you’ve passed your PASS objectives ... this is not a good time to be out of school,” Labyer said. "When you disrupt the day-to-day routine it takes a while to get back into the day-to-day routine, so we just have to be diligent.”

School districts are developing a variety of ways to cope with missed instructional time.
