We should have seen it coming in pregame, this shocker of a Super Bowl. A franchised defined by bags on heads and a city defined by a Biblical flood found absolution, beating Peyton Manning and the Colts 31-17 Sunday night.

And it started with the coin flip, when the newly-elected Pro Football Hall of Fame class, including Russ Grimm, Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice, stood sentry.

That’s NFC royalty at its finest, representing three Super Bowl titles each for the Redskins (Grimm), the Cowboys (Smith) and the 49ers (Rice), all from 1982-95, when the National Conference ruled the land.

Those days have been gone for a decade, and the Saints were expected to go the way of the rest of the modern NFC crowd.
