DHS aids parents, guardians, businesses
A four-month employment program administered through the Department of Human Services could benefit businesses squeezed by economic conditions.
Employers who hire or rehire workers who are parents — custodial or noncustodial — of a child receiving a benefit from the DHS Family Support Services can be reimbursed 100 percent of the wages, up to $12 an hour and 40 hours a week for the first month. For the remaining three months, employers are reimbursed 50 percent.
Employers also can get a retention bonus if they retain those workers for six months beyond the subsidy period.
The Subsidized Employment Program is funded from federal stimulus dollars.
"We actually met with employers, small businesses and manufacturers with our idea before we implemented it (the program), to make sure we’ll have a program that meets their needs,” said Paulette Bushers, who is a programs field representative.
