Stanford (35-1)
→Conference: Pac-10 (18-0)

→Road to the Final Four: First round, UC Riverside 79-47. Second round, Iowa 96-67. Sweet 16, Georgia 73-36. Elite Eight, Xavier 55-53.

→Season story line: If not for Connecticut, Stanford would be the talk of the women’s basketball world. The Cardinal lost to the Huskies in the national championship game a year ago and suffered its only loss of the season against UConn in December.

→Star player: Jayne Appel doesn’t lead the Cardinal in scoring or rebounding — that would be Nnemkadi Ogwumike — but the senior center makes Stanford go. When Appel was in foul trouble in the Elite Eight, the Cardinal became vulnerable.

→Best win: Jeanette Pohlen’s last-second heroics gave Stanford a 55-53 victory against Xavier. The Cardinal weathered foul trouble from Appel and an off night by Ogwumike to advance to the program’s ninth Final Four.

→Coach: Tara VanDerveer is among the legends in women’s basketball. She is only eight wins shy of 800 career victories, and she led Stanford to a pair of national titles in the early ’90s.
