A panel of 122 broadcasters and sportswriters each year determines awards ranging from MVP to Rookie of the Year to Sixth man.
Winners of eight awards won’t be announced until later this month and early May. But some trends surfaced after The Oklahoman collected 51 ballots, approximately 40 percent of the votes.
Borrowing an election term, The Oklahoman "projects” Brooks will win Coach of the Year.
Brooks received 31 of 51 first-place votes in The Oklahoman’s poll. More than half the ballots are unaccounted for. But the Thunder becoming one of only 10 teams in league history to improve by 25 or more wins will make Brooks a landslide winner.
"Seeing the growth of their kids speaks for itself,” said Dave D’Alessandro of the Newark Star Ledger. "They’re the proverbial team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs. I still find it odd that they’re only 15th in the league in offense, yet every time I watch them they have a 3-on-1 or 4-on-2 (fast break) more often than any other team.
