Early childhood program draws educators to Oklahoma City

Leaders in early childhood education from across the nation are meeting in Oklahoma City this week to explore an area in which Oklahoma excels — teaching youngsters before they even get to the kindergarten level.

"Oklahoma does have a reputation of being one of the leaders in the early childhood arena,” said Mike Burke, program director of the Buffett Early Childhood Fund.

Billionaire Warren Buffett’s daughter — Susan Buffett — created the fund to help Educare Centers proliferate across the nation. Now there are eight centers in the U.S.

The Educare Center in southeast Oklahoma City is a $9.3 million facility funded by both public and private dollars.

It opened in July to serve 200 students from birth to 5 years old. All of the students are economically disadvantaged and most live in poverty.

Representatives from similar centers in Chicago; Omaha, Neb.
