As lead singer for The City Lives, Chase Kerby is known for singing the soaring anthems of his melodic hard rock band, but as a solo artist, Kerby tends to look inward for his intimate, personal ballads.
Kerby is strongly influenced by Jeff Buckley, and the late songwriter's approach can be heard in Kerby's upper register. He said The City Lives enjoys a great deal of artistic freedom within its chosen area as a rock band, but Kerby's solo songs come from a solitary place rather than The City Lives' collaborative approach.
It was during a recent ice storm that Kerby first discovered his solo approach. He was house-sitting for his father: he had two microphones, his laptop, a guitar and a piano, and all the time in the world. What resulted was a batch of songs that came from a different place.
"Still singing those songs now, there's nothing I would change," Kerby said.
