Crawl for Cancer declines to release financial records on charity fundraisers

Kansas City-based Crawl for Cancer has a history of not releasing information about its finances despite promoting itself as a charity fundraiser. The group has previously faced scrutiny by the St. Louis Better Business Bureau and Lincoln, Neb. Police Chief Tom Casady.

Crawl for Cancer promotes organized team drinking competitions at bars and restaurants — but reports of lewd behavior, fights and abuse of families visiting Bricktown led merchants in the downtown Oklahoma City entertainment district to declare Crawl for Cancer is no longer welcome.

Local organizers this week declined to disclose an accounting for how funds from previous years were spent and referred questions to the national office in Kansas City, Mo. Officials with the company, however, did not respond to requests for interviews for this story.

The Bricktown Association isn’t the first organization to shun Crawl for Cancer. Caitlin Faddis, regional communications director for the Kansas City chapter of the American Cancer Society, said her organization was an early beneficiary of the group but cut all ties about two years ago.

"We told them we can no longer accept their money,” Faddis said. "We appreciate their efforts to raise money to help those with cancer, but we cannot support binge drinking.”

Faddis said it was her understanding the national office of the American Cancer Society had taken a similar position.

An attempt to start a Crawl for Cancer in Lincon, Neb. was canceled in 2007 when the town’s police chief, Tom Casady, called such events "philanthropic binge drinking” on his blog.
