High school notebook: Future Sooners lead Oklahoma roster at Heartland Classic

By Robert Przybylo and Scott Wright, Staff Writers Published: June 16, 2010
It's going to be their home for the next four years, but several of the state's high school baseball players signed with Oklahoma will get a head start.

Four signees for the Sooners will be a part of the Oklahoma all-star team for the Heartland Classic in Norman next week, running Tuesday through Saturday. A home run derby event is Monday.

Weatherford's Dillon Overton, Deer Creek's Cale Coshow, Putnam City North's Casey Coyle and Cayle Shambaugh of Jay have all signed with OU and will play next week.

The Heartland Classic is replacing the Sunbelt Classic. There will be 32 games played in the five games at OU's Mitchell Park, Norman North and Norman HS.

The championship will be played next Saturday night at 6 at Mitchell Park. Anyone interested in serving as a host family should call housing coordinator Kristen Gajewski at (405) 831-5709 or Jud Foster at (405) 294-0005.

Carl Albert sprinter saved in flood
Carl Albert sports fans might have noticed a familiar name in Monday's news coverage of flooding in the Oklahoma City metro area.

Titans track standout Ariana Smith, 16, was the survivor of perhaps the day's most dramatic rescue after the sport utility vehicle she was driving was swept off a bridge on Hefner Road near Sooner Road.
