Indigent Defense System grants raise to director, despite state budget cuts
Oklahoma's Indigent Defense System director is given $16,885 pay raise, despite statewide agency budget cuts.
In a year when state employees are being furloughed and services cut, the board that oversees Oklahoma's Indigent Defense System approved a $16,885 raise for the agency's director.
Beginning today, Executive director Joe Robertson's salary increases to $121,885 from $105,000 a year. The board, which is made up of private attorneys, approved the pay increase in a unanimous vote during its June 18 meeting. Robertson said his salary is now on par with what chief public defenders in Tulsa and Oklahoma counties make. State law requires county public defenders to be paid a salary comparable to what district attorneys make. The Oklahoma County district attorney's salary is $121,884, according to state payroll records.
