Oklahoman writer crawling toward weight loss victory

Weight loss continues at a snail's pace. The pounds are dropping, just not as quickly as Ken would like.

Sixteen weeks.

That's how long I've been at this "lifestyle change" thing.

The initial excitement has worn off. Going to the gym isn't as much fun as it was at the beginning. And my weight loss has slowed to a crawl.

I'm still losing weight. It's just taking longer.

A few weeks ago, I went to Las Vegas on vacation. I didn't lose any weight on that trip, but I didn't gain any, either.

On July 8, I weighed in and was down one pound.

July 15, another pound.

I was pretty sure that I'd see some acceleration when I weighed in Thursday. I'd done a better job of eating regular meals before then, and I'd gotten in some workouts as time allowed. I was expecting to see a two-pound decrease, minimum. Probably three pounds.

Instead, I hopped on the Wii Fit balance board and learned the truth: I'd lost another pound. Just one.

Don't get me wrong. I may have been an English major, but I understand that subtraction is the way to go when you're trying to lose weight. I haven't been seeing plus signs, just a lot of minuses. I'm doing good. I'm dropping pounds.

But man, I really want to do it faster.

It's my own fault, of course. If I want to lose more weight, I need to eat right every day and — big key — work out more often and harder.

As one of my readers pointed out, though, I'm not on an infomercial or a TV show. This isn't a race. Good thing, too, because I still can't run very far. I can walk all day at this point, but running? Not so much.

So I'm 16 weeks into my new life and 29 pounds thinner.

I guess that ain't so bad.
