Departure makes district wide open
Talihina's move to district 2A-6 has made this district up for grabs. Talihina won 12 games in 2009 and 11 in 2008 and went undefeated in district play both years.
Gore was picked to win the district by a majority of the coaches and after a season that saw them take an early exit in the playoffs they will be looking to take control of the district.
"All of my skill position kids are returning," said Gore coach Brandon Ellis. "I feel that we are a playoff team; I don't know if that's a one spot or a four spot but we will be able to compete this year."
Wewoka is the only new team joining District A-6 and are looking to bounce back from a disappointing two win campaign in 2009. But there is hope, as the team is returning seven starters on both sides of the ball.
"We don't have much depth but we are strong at the skill positions," said third year coach Tommy Bare.
Defense will be key for Savanna
Coach James Bond and Savanna experienced a major depletion this summer. The Bulldogs held opponents two touchdowns or less on seven occasions but now have to grow up quick to make that happen again.
"We lost four leading tacklers from last year," Bond said. "We have to replace some guys and play hard nosed."
Savanna has a lot of experience on the both sides of the line and will be moving running back Zac Boyle to quarterback this season. At 5-foot-7, Boyle isn't typical quarterback height but he's strong. Boyle benches 250 pounds and also plays outside linebacker.
"He's a rattlesnake, he'll bite you," Bond said.
Andrews headlines Pirates offense
Senior quarterback Logan Andrews threw for over 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns last year for Gore.
Andrews is 6-4, 205 pounds and runs a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash. He has drawn interest from several Division 1 schools, including Missouri, Texas A&M, Texas Tech.
