Senator Tom Coburn defends blocking action on food safety bill

Democrats investigating salmonella outbreak say Coburn is preventing stronger oversight

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tom Coburn, who has been blocking fast-track passage of a food safety bill, said Wednesday that Senate Democrats could bring up the legislation if they weren't busy pushing proposals on immigration, gays in the military and campaign finance reform.

Coburn's comments came after the head of a House committee investigating a salmonella outbreak traced to eggs pleaded with Coburn to release his hold on the bill.
