OSU football notebook: Mike Gundy calls K-State's Bill Snyder 'A class act for college football'

Cowboys coach Mike Gundy lay in bed Sunday night, reflecting on a gesture Bill Snyder made to the then-OSU quarterback in 1989.

It was Snyder's first season as coach at Kansas State and Gundy's last as a player.

"I had a knee injury and didn't play in the first half," Gundy said. "I played in the second half and we ended up winning. I got a handwritten letter from him the next week, like on Wednesday, saying, 'Congratulations. Great accomplishment.'

"I always remembered that. And laying in bed I thought, 'Now I have an opportunity to go against him as a head coach.'"

Snyder's story at K-State is now legendary, turning one of college football's dreadful programs into a national contender.

"Honestly, one of the few times in my life, I agree with coach (Barry) Switzer," Gundy said. "He said, 'He's the coach of the century.' And I firmly believe that."

And after retiring in 2005, Snyder returned to the Wildcats sideline a year ago and is again in the process of sparking a program revival at the age of 71.

"I think he is a class act for college football," Gundy said. "And he's a very good football coach. It's pretty amazing for a guy at that age to still be willing to pay the price it takes to have success.

"I doubt that when I'm 71, my energy level will be as high as his."

Kickoff for OSU's Nov. 6 home game against Baylor has been set for 11:30 a.m.

The game will be televised by FSN, marking the Cowboys' fourth appearance on the network this season.

There was much to regret defensively in the Nebraska game, when the Cowboys allowed 540 total yards and 44 of the 51 points.
