OKLAHOMA CITY - The State Election Board on Tuesday voted to appeal a judge's ruling putting a controversial state question banning Shariah law on hold.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The State Election Board on Tuesday voted to appeal a judge's ruling putting a controversial state question banning Shariah law on hold.

The Board voted 2-0 to appeal a temporary injunction issued Monday by U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange. The injunction was requested by Muneer Awad, executive director of the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Awad sought to prevent the State Election Board from certifying the results, alleging amending the state Constitution to name Shariah law singled out his Islamic faith for unfavorable treatment. He alleged it violated the First Amendment ban on passage of laws respecting a religion.
