NewsOK.com sports coverage ranks in top 10 nationally
NewsOK.com continues in elite company as its sports coverage was judged as being in the top 10 nationally for the second straight year.
The Oklahoman's website joined newspapers such as The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Boston Globe as being among the best in 2010, according to the Associated Press Sports Editors' annual online journalism contest.
NewsOK also made APSE's top 10 list in 2009, the first year of the website categories for the national competition.
“Sports is definitely our turf,” said David Thompson, publisher of The Oklahoman and president of OPUBCO Communications Group. "When it comes to sports coverage in Oklahoma, we dominate. We always have and we always will. We are very proud of our team.”
The Oklahoman was placed in the “Class A” category with the largest newspapers in the country. Other newspapers in the top 10 were the New York Daily News, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sun-Sentinel and Orlando, Fla., Sentinel.
Judges for Class A were Chairman Tom Bergeron of Yahoo! Sports, Randy Kim of AOLFanhouse, David E. Wilson of ESPN.com, and Brian White of MSNBC.com.
“This is especially gratifying considering the investment our company and staff continues to make in covering sports across all platforms,” Sports Editor Mike Sherman said. “Whether it's a story in The Oklahoman or a blog or video on NewsOK, we know we're serving one of the nation's most energized sports audiences. We're honored that the APSE judges have liked what we've done for two straight years."
