Tales from the Trail: Mike Gundy was almost a Sooner

Pat Jones wasn't sure about his chances of luring Mike Gundy to Oklahoma State out of Midwest City High School.

“We felt good about it because he fit into what we were doing,” said Jones, who coached at OSU from 1984 to 1994. “But Oklahoma State hadn't really gotten anything done at Midwest City because it was an OU (school).”

As good as Jones felt about breaking that trend, it appeared likely to continue when Gundy orally committed to the Sooners.

“He went to Norman to visit, then word got out that he committed to OU,” Jones said. “We got a hold of him, and he told us Coach (Barry) Switzer and a couple assistants got him in a room and he realized he wasn't going to get out until he told them he was going to come (to OU) or something to that effect.”

Gundy eventually told Jones and Switzer that OSU was going to be his final destination. The Cowboys ran a more balanced offensive attack than OU, which helped lure Gundy. He became a four-year starter at quarterback (1986-89) and led the Cowboys to back-to-back 10 win seasons.

Gundy just finished his sixth season as Oklahoma State head coach.

“We knew what we had going for us was our style of play,” Jones said. “And Mike was a smart guy.”
