Thunder notebook: Injured Serge Ibaka misses practice

BY JOHN ROHDE, Staff Writer, Published: May 5, 2011

In a precautionary move, Oklahoma City Thunder starting forward Serge Ibaka did not practice Thursday due to a sprained left ankle suffered late in Game 2 on Tuesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

With Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinal playoff series not until Saturday at 4 p.m., Ibaka was given a second straight day off to heal while not risking further injury.

Thunder coach Scott Brooks said Ibaka is day-to-day and will be re-evaluated at practice Friday morning. He is listed as probable for Game 3.

Ibaka also bumped knees in Game 2 shortly before halftime, but that injury has healed and was not the reason he missed Thursday's practice.

Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant played at Montrose Christian High School in Rockville, Md., with Memphis reserve point guard Greivis Vasquez.

"We competed with each other in high school, in AAU ball and in practices every day," Durant said of Vasquez, who is in his rookie season out of Maryland. "We became real close friends, like brothers. I'm glad to see him playing on a playoff team. I'm glad to see he's playing so well, but at the same time I want to beat him.

Any trash talking? "No, we don't do that, man," Durant said. "You can tell by our games we try to compete as hard as we can."

Durant also is friends with Grizzlies starting forward Rudy Gay, who is out for the playoffs after shoulder surgery. Gay played out of Archbishop Spalding High School in Baltimore.

Asked if he missed playing against Gay in the playoffs, Durant smiled and quickly answered, "No, I don't miss him. I never miss him. He's a tough cover. He can do everything at the offensive end. He's a tough defender. I wish he'd get back from his injury, but I'm kind of happy he's not playing this series."
