Venables' older brother, 43, died unexpectedly Friday in Colorado, a day after Sooner linebacker Austin Box passed away.

It's unclear how Venables' brother died, but an OU official verified the news Saturday. Venables left town immediately to be with family.

With head coach Bob Stoops vacationing in Italy, Venables addressed the media at a Thursday night press conference, after Box's death had been confirmed. Venables recruited Box out of Enid and was his position coach at OU.

“Austin was living his dream being an Oklahoma Sooner. He grew up his whole life doing exactly what he was doing everyday,” said a teary-eyed Venables, who always affectionately referred to him as “Box Knife.”

“We're numb, heartbroken. He was a great teammate. He was a joy to coach. Everybody on our team loved him. He will be greatly missed.”
