EDMOND — Greg Rodgers got the children in his audience to wave their hands above their heads like rabbit ears.
Next they held their nose as he described a smelly fish.
They laughed hysterically when Rodgers surprised them by shivering and whooping as if he was terrifically cold.
Rodgers was sharing his story of how the rabbit got his short, cotton ball tail. It involved a crafty fox, a hungry rabbit and a frozen river.
The several dozen children and their parents and grandparents listening to Rodgers' tales Tuesday morning at the Edmond Library were entranced.
“Good,” was the word Madison Permenter, 5, used to sum up what she thought of Rodgers' stories.
Rodgers is an author and a Choctaw storyteller. He shared his craft Tuesday to help kick off the Metropolitan Library System's summer reading program.
Mary Ann Johnson, assistant librarian for children's services at the Edmond Library, said the library will have at least two programs each week for children this summer.
In addition to stories, Rodgers got children involved in his tales by having them help sing songs, act out scenes and play instruments, such as a drum and several rattles.
Madison gave the turtle-shell rattle a shake, saying she liked it best of all.
