You'll find no lockouts here. No scandals. No investigations.

Today we celebrate the good side of sports.

This is Scholar-Athlete Day, the annual celebration of high school seniors from the Oklahoma City area who best combine excellence in athletics and academics. The Oklahoman and the Jim Thorpe Association went looking for great candidates, and boy, did we find a bunch.

More than a hundred applied.

Only eight received scholarships.

What's great about this group of winners is their diversity. They come from big schools like Mustang and small ones like Okarche. They come from public districts such as Bridge Creek and Tuttle and private schools such as Heritage Hall and Casady. They play team sports like football and basketball and individual ones such as diving and tennis.

This bunch is truly representative of the variety of high school sports in this area.

These scholar-athletes are also an extraordinary example of what's good in sport.
