An Oklahoma City teenager who admitted playing around with Molotov cocktails before a deadly fire said he got the idea to make them from the movie “Jackass 3,” police reported.

Tristan Ryan Owen, 15, is being held on murder and arson complaints. He denies setting the fire that killed an elderly couple.

Boyd Haynes, 87, and his wife, Doris Haynes, 86, died from smoke inhalation. They were sleeping in the bedroom of their Oklahoma City home when the fire started shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Owen lived nearby with a grandparent. Neighbors saw him outside at the time of the fire. Police found two busted bottles used to make Molotov cocktails in the street by his house. Owen was arrested Wednesday morning and questioned by police.

“Tristan denied any wrongdoing at first but later recanted his statement and admitted to making the Molotov cocktails after he saw them being made on a movie called ‘Jackass 3,'” Oklahoma City police detective Ryan Porter wrote in a request for a search of the boy's cellphone.

“Tristan advised he did light the Molotov cocktails and throw them but they busted and never caught fire,” Porter wrote in the request. “Tristan advised he also lit an old pair of pajamas on fire on the west side of his residence in a trash can.”
