– Oklahoma State University reached a $750 million milestone last fiscal year on its way toward a $1 billion fundraising goal, the school said Monday.

Half of the money from the campaign is to go toward scholarships, with the remainder to be used for hiring and retaining faculty and improving facilities and programs.

Officials said they expect to reach their $1 billion goal by 2014.

“We are on a remarkable pace,” OSU President Burns Hargis said.

The campaign publicly launched in February 2010 after raising $537 million in a “silent” phase that lasted just over two years.

Much of the $252.8 million that was raised last fiscal year came from Pickens Legacy Scholarship Match.

Alumnus and energy tycoon T. Boone Pickens created the fund, and said he would match up to $100 million in private donations.

He committed another $20 million after the campaign saw record numbers of donations.

“The Pickens Legacy Scholarship Match has been a transformational, record-breaking success, inspiring a new generation of donors to OSU,” Kirk Jewell, president and CEO of the OSU Foundation, said.

So far, the campaign has received committed gifts from more than 66,000 donors.
