Oklahoma City had a high temperature of 106 degrees Tuesday, giving the city its 52nd day of triple-digit temperatures in 2011 and breaking the city's daily high temperature record for Aug. 23.

That extends the Oklahoma City record for triple-digit temperatures in a calendar year. This week, the city surpassed the 50 days of triple-digit heat recorded in 1980. The previous record daily high for Aug. 23 was 105 degrees in 1980.

The Oklahoma City forecast calls for triple-digit high temperatures through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service's forecast office in Norman.

Also Tuesday, Grandfield added to its state record with 88 days of triple-digit heat. Altus is now tied at second with Hollis' 86 days in 1956.

And Hollis' 83 days of triple-digit temperatures this year is now tied for fourth with Healdton in 1980 and Walters in 1998. Tuesday, Grandfield, Altus and Hollis reached 107 degrees.

The climatological summer runs from June 1 to Aug. 31. According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, the average temperature for the summer through Monday is 86.7 degrees. The hottest summer on record since records began in the U.S. in 1895 is the summer of 1934 in Oklahoma at 85.2 degrees, according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey.

“That's all the highs and all the lows averaged together to get a statewide figure,” said Gary McManus of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. “It's a little more complicated than that with climate divisions, weighting factors and et cetera, but that's the gist of it.”
