Solid group returns on defense for Del City

Last season, for the second consecutive season, Del City just missed out on a postseason berth.

Also for the second consecutive season, the Eagles lost a very talented group of seniors to graduation.

There is still plenty of hope for the Eagles, though, in their final season in Class 6A.

Next season, Del City drops to Class 5A in football.

The Eagles' strength would appear to lie on the defensive side, where a solid group returns, including safeties Sheldon Abernathy and Terry Love.

Abernathy, a senior, had 57 tackles last year while Love, a junior, had 37.

Another junior, Cory Lawrence, might be the best of the bunch.

Del City coach Nike Warehime calls Lawrence the best pure athlete at the school.

Lawrence's speed — he was one of the top 100-meter runners at last spring's state meet and helped the Eagles' 400-meter relay team win a state title — figures to give Del City a weapon on both sides of the ball.

Chris Talley, a 6-foot, 253-pound defensive lineman, gives the Eagles a strong presence up front.

The offensive side is likely to be a bit behind the defense at least early in the season.
