The Star Spencer Bobcats won a state championship in 2009, but won only one game a year ago, so new coach James Harding has taken over with the motivation to return the Bobcats to the top. With only a few seniors on the team, Harding plans to rely heavily on the leadership of Derrick Ward, who can play linebacker, defensive end, tight end or fullback for Star Spencer:

How do you view your role as a leader, being one of the few seniors on the team?

You've got to have leadership on each team. Since I'm a senior, it's my job to do, regardless. So I'm just stepping up to be a leader as I've been in my life.

What improvements do you want to see from your team by the time the season starts?

I really want to see a lot more leadership. I want to see us getting together and being a family. Just get better and get serious about it.

What do you view as the strength of this team?

I would say the offensive line. We're getting better. We're improving, trying to make up for what we did not do last year.

Have the players been able to put last year behind them?

It's got to be put behind us. You can't look back, just forward and keep going through everything the right way. Do better than you did last year.

You stay pretty busy with a part-time job, football and school, don't you?

Yeah, I go to Metro Tech for airframe mechanics, I play football, I've got a job and I've got my own business, Derrick's Lawn Mowing Business. I like it though. It keeps me busy.
