— A wildfire that threatened homes in Noble on Thursday afternoon burned about 300 acres and resulted in injuries to three firefighters before being contained, officials said.

Norman Fire Chief James Fullingim said one firefighter was taken to Norman Regional Hospital with facial burns. The firefighter was expected to make a full recovery. Two others suffered minor injuries, he said.

The fire began shortly after 2 p.m. at 48th Avenue NE and Etowah Road, just across the street from Noble High School.

The high school was not threatened, but school was let out early so buses could take students home or to a safe area, where parents were called to pick them up, Noble City Manager Bob Wade said.

The fire was pushed north into a heavily wooded area by winds gusting up to 30 mph.

“We were very fortunate,” Wade said. “The fire started on the edge of a populated area and moved away from it. There were some houses threatened, but none of them caught fire.”

About 24 grass rigs and 14 pumper trucks responded to the blaze, which burned for more than three hours from 48th to 60th Avenue NE and Etowah to Post Oak Road, Wade said.

Firefighters from Norman, Little Axe and Slaughterville helped fight the fire. National Guard Black Hawk helicopters also were used to dump buckets of water on areas where the fire was most intense.

Wade said the fire may have started from sparks from heavy equipment, where contractors were working on Etowah Road.

Fire crews were to remain on the scene into the evening to watch for flare-ups, the city manager said.
