OU football notebook: Sooners defensive coordinator Brent Venables hoping for repeat of 2010

Oklahoma held Florida State scoreless nine consecutive possessions in last year's 47-17 rout after the Seminoles scored on their opening drive.

“We got them out of their element a year ago. They like to be balanced,” said OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables. “But we jumped on them so quick they had to throw it more and made them predictable. We were able to tee off on them. That's not the team they want to be and haven't been when they've been successful.”

Playing Florida State has fond memories for coach Bob Stoops, his staff and OU fans.

Stoops was confident he could turn around the program when he was hired 13 years ago but there was an aura of pessimism.

“I felt it from everybody when we got here and read it (in the newspaper) that all those championship years wouldn't be returning here, that time had passed,” Stoops said.

Everything changed in 2000, a season capped by a 13-2 win over the Seminoles in the national title game.

“The mood changed,” Stoops said. “It shot us right back into one of the more elite teams.”

Williams' status uncertain

Starting right offensive tackle Daryl Williams has been limited in practice this week after suffering a high ankle sprain against Tulsa. Will he play Saturday?

“I'm not sure right now,” Williams said. “It's frsutrating because this is such a big game.”

If Williams can't play Lane Johnson, a converted defesnive end who impressed coaches during fall camp, would get the start.

“It's a great opportunity,” Johnson said. “Obviously there's going to be a lot of hype with ESPN, but it's a process we have to go through. We just have to take it day by day.”

Florida State junior Greg Reid led the nation in punt returns his freshman year, averaging 18.4 yards a return. Last year, he once again ranked among the national leaders (10.1 average). He's returned two punts for touchdowns.
