Fallin announces Okla. storm shelter rebate offer

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: September 27, 2011

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin says as many as 500 Oklahoma homeowners will be eligible for a $2,000 cash rebate for the installation of a qualified tornado shelter.

Fallin and Oklahoma Emergency Management Director Albert Ashwood announced details Tuesday of the SoonerSafe rebate program.

Using $1 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency grant money, the program will provide a 75 percent rebate of up to $2,000 to Oklahomans who install an eligible above- or below-ground shelter.

The program is only for homeowners, and recipients will be selected randomly on Jan. 3, although priority will be given to residents whose homes were destroyed by tornadoes earlier this year. Ashwood says he anticipates as many as 20,000 Oklahomans could apply for an estimated 500 rebates.
