What they're saying about the college football uniform trend

OSU equipment manager Wes Edwards on having so many uniform options: “For us, it's fun. It's a little more time-consuming, but without these athletes, we don't have a job. Seeing their reaction, like when we got to College Station and the players actually realized that they're wearing the gray helmet for the first time, it gives them a little pep. I don't think it does much for the game, but it just changes it up and gives the guys something to look forward to.”


OSU director of marketing Kyle Wray on the influence of Oregon's uniform philosophy: “Some people stand around and say, ‘Oh, those Oregon uniforms are awful.' Well, that's not what 17-, 18-, 21-year-olds think. They think they're great. They like the change.”

Jim Bartko, Oregon executive senior associate athletic director for development, on other schools adopting the school's uniform philosophy: “We thought that it was something that Oregon stood for as far as innovation and being creative, and it was kind of going to be our niche. Just looking around, a lot of other schools are doing it. So it's kind of ironic a little bit. It's flattering to the program, but we don't do it so other schools can copy. We do it to kind of keep one step ahead of everybody else.”

Nate Pine, Maryland senior associate athletic director and chief of staff, on the “Maryland Pride” uniforms: “We want folks to understand Maryland on a national level. This was the first step in that direction. The state flag being iconic means a lot to the folks of Maryland, but it also gave us an audience and a platform to educate more folks about Maryland and the University of Maryland.”

Steve Hank, Arizona State associate athletic director for revenue generation, on the Sun Devils' all-black uniforms: “In the 1950s, we wore black helmets, so it was a nod back to tradition. And black is also a very contemporary and relevant color to people across the country today. It's very fashionable. Is some of this fashion-related? Yes. And that's an attempt for us to keep our innovative and contemporary image out there.”
