Wind could raise wildfire danger in Oklahoma Friday

Gusty winds are in central Oklahoma Friday morning that might raise fire danger. Rain is reported on the way by Saturday night.

In wind gusts of more than 30 mph Friday morning, firefighters quickly extinguished a grass fire near Will Rogers World Airport.

The fire was located about 6:20 a.m. in southwest Oklahoma City between Interstate 44 and S Meridian Avenue.

Gusty winds and dry conditions are expected in central Oklahoma Friday, the National Weather Service reports.

Near Cushing, firefighters late Thursday got a handle on a wildfire that burned almost 12 hours 5 miles southeast of Cushing after it started in northeast Lincoln County, fire dispatcher Derek Griffith said.

The fire started about 11 a.m. Thursday and was out about 11 p.m. Thursday night. No one was hurt. One abandoned structure burned.

Rain chances will increase in central Oklahoma Saturday night, the weather service reports.
