The Barons were 2 1/2 minutes from forcing overtime and picking up at least one standings point against Charlotte on Friday night. But a questionable roughing penalty called against defenseman Colten Teubert with 2:19 remaining left the Barons short-handed and ultimately led to the Checkers' game-winning goal.

Barons captain Bryan Helmer, however, said Teubert doesn't need a talking-to about his aggressiveness on the questionable play.

“Tubey's an intense player. He plays on that edge,” Helmer said. “I didn't really see (the hit), but a lot of guys said it was questionable. And to call it in the last minute of the game is pretty tough. I wouldn't say anything to Tubey about that because, like I said, he plays on an edge and he has to do that to be successful.”

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

The Barons dropped their first ever game against Charlotte but perhaps learned what to expect when they meet again.

“I think next time we'll be more prepared,” said Mark Arcobello, who scored the Barons' only goal for his first of the year. “I think the next time we play them we'll know a little more about them and hopefully it'll go a little bit better for us.”

The Barons will face the Checkers seven more times this season. The Checkers, the Carolina Hurricanes farm team, return to Oklahoma City for a back-to-back on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12.
