The Governor's Wind Energy Coalition, which includes Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, is calling on Congress to extend a federal tax incentive for the wind industry.

The group, which includes 23 governors from Massachusetts to California, sent a letter Tuesday urging Congressional leaders in Washington to preserve the tax credit.

“As governors from diverse regions of this nation, we share an interest in the development of our states' wind energy resources and the associated manufacturing and infrastructure modernization benefits — an interest that will be severely damaged if the wind production tax credit expires,” wrote Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who are the group's chairman and vice chairman.

American Wind Energy Association CEO Denise Bode thanked the governor's for supporting the wind industry.

“The 23 governors in this coalition are on the front lines of creating jobs and economic development in their states,” she said Wednesday.

“Their broad, bipartisan support of a four-year extension for wind's key federal tax incentive is yet another indication of how wind energy is generating manufacturing jobs and economic opportunity all across the country.”

Bode said the industry is on track to provide 20 percent of the country's electricity in less than 20 years.
